Movie Review: Kill Your Darlings

Hello readers,

I just got back from my trip to Perth, Western Australia. During the trip, I managed to buy Kill Your Darlings, which is unavailable in Singapore due to its sensitive content. The film starred Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan.

Kill Your Darlings is a 2013 film loosely based on the Beats poets including mainly Allen Ginsberg and also the controversial murder of David Kammerer by Lucien Carr. The reason why I said it is loosely based instead of true story is because some parts of the account was dramatized, including the murder of David Kammerer.

The film was beautifully crafted with fine writing and also metaphors used to expressed the Beats' world. Daniel Radcliffe as Allen Ginsberg, was definitely enjoyable to watched. To be honest, I never doubt his acting since he did well in Woman In Black two years ago. For Dane DeHaan as controversial Lucien Carr, again I am not surprised by how he is able to play such "James Dean-like" character, since I saw him played as Andrew in Chronicle.

Kill Your Darlings may just be about exploring sexuality, however the film also shows how you can make a revolution and defy all rules. Beats poets are rebels who believe in their own beliefs and topics which has been viewed as controversial during that time (1940s). You see, with many films like this, you can explore the trends during a certain period, whether it is in 21st century or 19th century.

With the conclusion to the review, Kill Your Darlings is a film worth watching if you are really into the world of controversy and madness.
